Clary Sage oil can be helpful with female health and can help with  PMS/PMT, painful periods, irregular periods, scanty menstruation, menopause and to aid relaxation during labor, thus encouraging a less painful birth (also widely used by pregnant women who are past their due date to encourage labor). It is a powerful muscle relaxant which can help with muscle pain, tension and spasm and has aphrodisiac properties which are particularly helpful where sexual problems are related to stress. It is also a useful tonic to use during convalescence or after childbirth.

Diffusion: Use three to four drops in the diffuser of choice. 

Topical use:

For massage, mix 5 drops with 10 ml carrier oil.

For bath, mix 5 drops with 5 ml carrier oil.

For perfuming, mix 1 drop to 10 drops carrier oil.

 Clary Sage's modern name is a corruption of its old name 'Clear Eye', which reveals its highly esteemed use as an eye remedy. The seeds were placed in water until they developed a mucilaginous coating. Thus prepared they were placed in the eye in order to 'catch' any stray particles of dust and thus clear the vision. Today, sometimes an infusion is used for the same purpose, but the seeds work better.

It also had quite a reputation as a mind altering herb. In Britain in particular it was often used for brewing ale, imparting that extra punch, which apparently made it 'fit to please drunkards, who thereby, according to their several dispositions, become either dead drunk, or foolish drunk, or mad drunk.' This drunken stupor was followed by a mighty hangover and headache. In Germany it was mixed with Elderflowers to adulterate wine, which thereby gained a flavour not unlike Muscatel wine. The German name 'Muskateller Salbei' still serves as a reminder of this dubious use.
